What Makes Horsepower So Important?

James Watt probably didn't understand he was coining a term that would last centuries. Watt was an 18th-century engineer. He wanted a way to estimate the strength it took for horses to pull or lift coal in a specific amount of time.

Watt did just that. He established the term horsepower by watching the ponies at the coal mine. He estimated that a single horse could pull 22,000 foot-pounds of coal in a single minute. He increased that by 50% to 33,000 foot-pounds for what is now known as the industry standard for horsepower. This means a vehicle with one horsepower could pull 33 pounds in a minute. This gives you a more accurate picture of just how well designed modern vehicles are.
